Fatal 16-Vehicle Pileup During Snow Squall Shuts Down I-80: PA State Police

A massive 16-vehicle pileup during a blinding snow squall on Interstate 80 turned deadly early Friday, Feb. 14, Pennsylvania State Police reported.

The chaos erupted at 2:42 a.m. near mile marker 218 westbound in Liberty Township, Montour County, close to Danville. One person was killed, and two others were rushed to the hospital with serious injuries, police said.

The wreck shut down I-80 westbound indefinitely, with traffic being rerouted at the Danville exit, mile marker 224.

Montour County Commissioner Trevor Finn praised emergency crews for their rapid response, stating:

"We just cleared the EOC from a multi-vehicle accident on I-80. We are very fortunate to have the volunteer first responders/firefighters that we have. Well done to all. Thank you to all Montour County EMS folks who opened the EOC and traveled to the scene to assist with management of the incident."

Investigators confirmed severe weather played a role in the deadly crash, and more details are expected as the investigation continues.
